Sustainability at Atomic Object

On March 27, 2013 Local First held its 5th Annual Sustainable Business Conference. I was invited to speak on a panel about sustainability initiatives in business. My fellow panelists were Marcia Rapp of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Kris Spaulding of Brewery Vivant, and Matt VanSweden of Integrated Architecture. Bill Smith of CompuCraft was our panel’s moderator.

“Have you ever thought about learning to program?”

That’s the first sentence in a recent blog post by the Swedish game company Mojang, creator of the hit game, Minecraft. The post describes their recent and upcoming work to create a virtual environment where beginners can explore the power of programming on a low-cost, open platform. While this may not seem interesting to anyone unfamiliar with Minecraft or the Raspberry Pi, the combination with early programming learning is a big deal to me. Here’s why.

Inspiration: The Water Clocks of Bernard Gitton

Not long ago, I had an interesting lunchtime discussion with Job Vranish. I don’t recall exactly how we got on the topic, but we were discussing how mesmerizing siphons are. As the discussion progressed to imagining a fluid-based computer (that’s another story…), I remembered something I had seen as a child at the Indianapolis Children’s museum: an immense clock that kept time with the flow of water through glass tubes.
